Once you have driven down Baja California and are now ready to explore Mexico’s mainland, the best way to do it is by taking the ferry across the Gulf of California. Baja Ferries has two routes departing from Pichilingue Port in La Paz to Mazatlan and Topolobampo. Baja Ferries suspended their Santa Rosalia Ferry/Guaymas route in 2021, for now and until this route is open, you will have to drive from Guaymas to Topolobampo or Mazatlán to cross to Baja.
But before we go over ferry information, there are essential requirements for this trip. You need to have a Tourist card (FMM Forma Multiple Migratoria); we recommend that you start the process online before leaving the United States and stop at the INM (immigration) office at the border to get it stamped. Without a tourist card for yourself and all those traveling with you, you will not be able to take the ferry across to Mexico’s mainland. In addition, you will need a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit to drive in mainland Mexico. This permit can be processed online even a month in advance before leaving home, at the border or at any Banjercito office in Mexico.

Baja Ferries published rates are one way, include taxes and one meal on the cruise, have reserved seats on the main cabin. Amenities on board include a restaurant, bar and souvenir shop. Passengers over 70 years of age or more than 7 months pregnant need to have medical certificate confirming that they have clearance from their doctor to board the ferry. Contact Baja Ferries before purchasing your ticket online. When you buy a ticket for your vehicle, it also includes the driver. The Baja Star has cabins ranging from single cabins with an ocean view to suites with queen size beds and a balcony up to the VIP Master Suite including a DVD player, mini fridge, bath tub and balcony. Their Facebook page is a great source for last minute changes that might not be reflected on their website. Changes may happen related to weather and other conditions; remember safety first.
Pets
Baja Ferries accepts cats and dogs as domestic pets; they must travel in their own kennel. They have to be registered and they will need their vaccination record from your vet with dates and a signature. Mexico has recently updated the regulations around bringing your pet while you travel here. Passengers must have the documents requested by the authorities in port. On board, there is a designated area for all pets. Only service dogs are allowed in the salons and cabins. You must notify them of your service dog and have the appropriate documentation when registering your pet. Check Pet Transport Policies for more information.
